Java Full Stack Developer

Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced Java Full Stack Developer with 6+ years of professional software development experience to design, develop, and maintain secure, scalable, enterprise-grade applications. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on expertise in Java, Spring Boot, microservices, React, AWS, and MongoDB, along with practical experience in containerised deployments and event-driven architectures using Kubernetes and Kafka.

The successful candidate will work closely with product owners, architects, QA engineers, DevOps teams, and other developers to deliver reliable software solutions. We are also looking for someone who actively uses AI-assisted development tools and understands how to apply them responsibly throughout the software development lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

Backend Development

• Design, develop, test, and maintain enterprise-grade backend services using Java and Spring Boot.
• Build scalable, resilient, and independently deployable microservices following sound architectural principles.
• Design and implement RESTful APIs and service-to-service integrations, including appropriate validation, error handling, logging, and documentation.
• Apply secure coding practices, authentication and authorisation patterns, and API security best practices.
• Write clean, reusable, maintainable, and well-tested code.
• Diagnose and resolve application defects, performance bottlenecks, and production issues.

Frontend Development

• Develop responsive, accessible, and maintainable user interfaces using React.
• Build reusable UI components and integrate frontend applications with backend APIs.
• Manage application state, form validation, routing, and asynchronous data interactions using appropriate React ecosystem tools.
• Collaborate with UX/UI designers and backend engineers to deliver consistent, user-friendly experiences.
• Consider frontend performance, browser compatibility, and maintainability when implementing features.

Microservices and System Integration

• Design and implement microservices-based solutions for enterprise applications.
• Apply appropriate patterns for service communication, resilience, fault handling, configuration, and observability.
• Build event-driven integrations using Apache Kafka, including producers, consumers, topics, and message-processing patterns.
• Consider idempotency, retry strategies, ordering, and failure recovery when designing asynchronous workflows.
• Contribute to technical design discussions and help identify opportunities to improve architecture and reliability.

Cloud, Containers, and Deployment

• Develop, deploy, and support applications running on AWS services.
• Package and run applications using containers and deploy/manage workloads using Kubernetes.
• Work with deployment configurations, environment-specific settings, secrets, health checks, and resource requests and limits.
• Collaborate with DevOps teams on CI/CD pipelines, automated deployments, monitoring, and release practices.
• Troubleshoot application and deployment issues across development, test, staging, and production environments.

Database and Performance

• Design data models and implement persistence using MongoDB.
• Write efficient database queries and apply suitable indexing, schema design, and data-access patterns.
• Analyse application and database performance and recommend improvements.
• Apply caching strategies where appropriate to reduce latency and improve throughput.
• Consider data consistency, concurrency, scalability, and reliability when designing data-intensive features.

Quality, Security, and Engineering Practices

• Write unit tests and contribute to integration, API, and end-to-end testing.
• Participate in code reviews and follow established coding, branching, and release standards.
• Use Git and contribute to automated build, test, and deployment workflows.
• Apply secure development practices and avoid exposing credentials, secrets, or sensitive data.
• Create and maintain technical documentation, API specifications, and implementation notes.
• Work collaboratively in an Agile/Scrum or similar delivery environment.

AI-Assisted Development and ADLC

• Use AI-assisted coding tools integrated with the development environment, such as GitHub Copilot, Amazon Q Developer, or Claude, to improve productivity.
• Apply AI tools to code generation, refactoring, test creation, debugging, code explanation, and technical documentation.
• Review and validate AI-generated code for correctness, security, performance, maintainability, and compliance with project standards.
• Use AI tools responsibly, protecting proprietary code, credentials, customer data, and other confidential information.
• Familiarity with AI Development Lifecycle (ADLC) concepts and practices is highly valued, including the lifecycle considerations involved in building, testing, deploying, monitoring, and maintaining AI-enabled applications or features.

Collaboration and Communication

• Work effectively with cross-functional teams, technical leads, architects, QA, and business stakeholders.
• Communicate technical concepts, implementation choices, risks, and progress clearly.
• Contribute to design reviews, estimation, sprint planning, and technical problem-solving.
• Take ownership of assigned work and proactively raise blockers or delivery risks.

Required Skills and Qualifications

• Experience: 6+ years of professional experience in full stack software development.
• Java: Strong hands-on experience with Java and object-oriented programming principles.
• Spring Boot: Proven experience building production-ready REST APIs and microservices using Spring Boot.
• Microservices: Practical experience designing, developing, integrating, and supporting microservices-based enterprise applications.
• React: Strong experience developing frontend applications using React, including component-based development and API integration.
• AWS: Hands-on experience deploying or supporting applications on AWS.
• MongoDB: Experience with data modelling, query optimisation, indexing, and application integration.
• Kubernetes: Practical experience deploying, configuring, or troubleshooting containerised applications on Kubernetes.
• Kafka: Hands-on experience implementing event-driven processing or messaging with Apache Kafka.
• AI Development Tools: Experience using an AI coding assistant such as GitHub Copilot, Amazon Q Developer, or Claude within the development workflow.
• Testing and Code Quality: Understanding of automated testing, debugging, code reviews, and maintainable software design.
• Version Control: Working knowledge of Git and collaborative development workflows.
• Communication: Good verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.

Good to Have

• Experience implementing caching solutions using Redis, Amazon ElastiCache, Caffeine, or similar technologies.
• Familiarity with AI Development Lifecycle (ADLC) practices.
• Experience with CI/CD tools and infrastructure automation.
• Familiarity with observability tools, centralised logging, metrics, distributed tracing, and production monitoring.
• Knowledge of API gateways, service discovery, resilience patterns, and distributed-system troubleshooting.
• Experience with cloud-native security practices, IAM, secrets management, and application security.
• Experience working in Agile/Scrum teams and enterprise software delivery environments.
